Day's Patience Page 28
“We have hundreds of years?” Grayson took Lettie’s hands. “Can you imagine the things we can learn and the lives we could save?”
“Yes.” She smiled. When she first came to Whiterock, she had never imagined she would find a mate and a purpose. “Grayson and I would like to stay here, if Samuel would have us. There is much to be done to heal this community.”
Jasper rubbed his square chin. “You’ll be missed in Alysblud.”
“But you will return for the wedding,” Dawn said.
“Of course! I need to make sure my brother does the honourable thing. Not to mention Hector.” Lettie winked at Marjory.
The nurse let out a sigh. “I suppose there’s nothing for it. I will have to marry the old goat and keep him out of trouble.”
Everyone laughed. A wedding, or a double wedding, would give everyone back home something to work toward and celebrate.
Grayson ran his fingers down his moustache. “I know of someone who would make an excellent replacement doctor. He’s had some troubles in the past and the village might be the safe haven he needs.”
Jasper nodded. “Write to him and see if he will visit us. We have the temporary doctor we hired in your absence for a little longer. Meanwhile, we need to find new owners for the shipyard.”
Lettie knew the perfect person to take over managing the shipyard. “George knows the business inside and out. He would make a good manager. His writing is slow, but he will improve with practice.”
“I know you want to see Rachel again, Samuel. But if I could persuade you to stay with us for a little longer, I’d like Elijah to come out here. He is ready to spread his wings and needs another Warder to look to now,” Jasper said.
The old Warder gave a slight bow. “I’d be honoured, my lord.”
“What do we do now?” Dawn asked her mate.
Jasper took her hand. “We follow the Esmeralda. We also need to look at this paperweight of yours and see if we can discover why the Soarers would be after it.”
“We follow the ghost ship on her voyage of despair,” Dawn murmured.
About A.W. Exley
Books and writing have always been an enormous part of my life. I survived school by hiding out in the library, with several thousand fictional characters for company. At university, I overcame the boredom of studying accountancy by squeezing in Egyptology papers and learning to read hieroglyphics.
Today, I write historical fantasy novels from my home in rural New Zealand.
